Overturned nitrogen tanker shuts down U.S. 23

A tanker truck carrying liquid nitrogen overturned yesterday morning in Floyd County on U.S. 23 in Ivel. Officials say the driver lost control and the vehicle turned over in the middle of the highway. The road was shut down for three hours while haz-mat crews cleaned up the scene. They transferred the liquid nitrogen to another truck.

"Liquid nitrogen is not dangerous. It's a hazardous chemical but it's really cold and they use it in tracking wells, so as far as a danger to the community, no it wasn’t," Floyd County Emergency Management Director Jim Caldwell said.

The highway re-opened around 11:30 a.m. Police say the truck driver went to the hospital with minor injuries. Officials say the truck was from Norton, Virginia and on the way to Auxier in Floyd County.
