Fiscal court strikes down motion to investigate utility's finances

The Floyd County fiscal court rejected a proposal by one magistrate to have a local utility account for its financial condition. District 1 Magistrate John Goble asked fellow members of the court to adopt a resolution requiring Southern Water and Sewer District to provide the court with copies of its audits from 2008, 2009 and 2010, as well as a balance sheet for 2011. In his motion to that effect, he also asked that members of the Southern Water board meet with the fiscal court to go over the utility’s finances. District 4 Magistrate Ronnie Akers seconded Goble’s motion, but they were the only two who voted in favor of the request. District 2 Magistrate Hattie Owens and District 3 Magistrate Warren Jarrell voted against the motion, and Marshall broke the tie by also voting against it.
