District 12 road crew gearing up for another rough winter
Colder weather is bearing down on the Commonwealth, which means the winter travel season is upon us. District 12 snow fighters are ready for it. Their 17-ton trucks are outfitted with 10-foot plows. Each one holds 8 tons of rock salt. Each driver not only has the required CDL, but they are all specially trained in snow and ice removal. They can drive in places most people would not dare with dry pavement, much less a road covered with snow. All have nerves of steel and will go anywhere at any time regardless of weather conditions. Highway District 12 of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has more than 125 heavy equipment operators and nearly 150 other specialists trained to work weather events, such as engineers, mechanics, and dispatchers. All recently completed their required annual training. They average 11 years of experience and know how to plan for the worst weather conditions.
