Phone scammers back at it again

The Better Business Bureau is warning residents of Eastern Kentucky it has received reports of a local scam promising a “free grant” from the U.S. government, but which in reality only leaves victims’ pocketbooks a little lighter. The scam artists are calling Kentuckians, claiming to represent the federal government and telling potential victims they have been “selected” for the grant. However, BBB says there is no such program. Caller ID on some consumers’ phones are showing “private” for the calls, while others show phone numbers with 202 area codes, which is the area code for Washington D.C. The BBB believes that is in an effort to convince the victims that the call is legitimately from the government. Consumers describe the callers as having thick, foreign accents and stating they are calling from the U.S. Treasury or other federal government department.
