Indictments returned for couple accused of abuse, implicated in death of toddler
A couple is now charged with murder after the death of a two year old. A Floyd County grand jury returned murder indictments against Jason and Gladys Dickerson in the death of two-year-old Watson Adkins in October. The Dickersons had custody of the child, and state records show allegations that the couple abused the toddler. No court dates are set yet for the Dickersons. Statistics released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau reveal that Floyd County has the highest rate of children living in poverty among all surrounding counties, and the seventh-highest rate in the state, with a rate more than twice the national average. According to the 2010 Income and Poverty Estimates, Floyd County has 3,801 children living in poverty, representing 43.5 percent of those under 18. The state average is 26.1 percent, while the national rate is 21.6. Overall, Floyd County had the second-highest rate of overall poverty in the region, at 29.9 percent.
