Final report on Upper Big Branch mine disaster coming Dec. 6
Federal investigators will be releasing their final report on the explosion that killed 29 miners at West Virginia's Upper Big Branch coal mine in 2010. MSHA says it will brief the victims' families and the media December 6 in Beaver. MSHA, the United Mine Workers and an independent panel all agree that poorly maintained machines that were cutting into sandstone created a spark that ignited both a small amount of naturally occurring methane gas and a massive accumulation of explosive coal dust. Kevin Lambert, who was there that day and was about to start his shift when the explosion occurred, said the risks were known.
