AppalReD announces legal aid program
With this week being Kentucky Nonprofit Week, Appalachian Research and Defense Legal Aid will be opening its doors to the public today, in an effort to increase awareness about the program’s services.
AppalReD Legal Aid provides free civil legal services to people who are living at or below the federal poverty level. The program offers its services to a 37-county area in Eastern Kentucky, where over 244,000 people live in poverty. AppalReD helps approximately 6,000 clients each year and charges no fees. However, a client might have to pay court costs. In some cases, services may be provided by a private attorney who has volunteered their time or who has contracted with AppalReD to provide services on a reduced fee. The Prestonsburg office, located at 120 North Front Avenue in Prestonsburg, will host its open house Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
