School bus loses control on U.S. 23
A Floyd County school bus was seen idling near the shoulder of US 23 after driver lost control and the vehicle spun off the road Wednesday afternoon. The sight of a school bus in trouble is something no one wants to see in Floyd County, where no one has forgotten that the worst school bus disaster in the history of the United states took place 54 years ago.
According to Floyd County Schools Superintendent Henry Webb, Floyd County School Bus 509 was on US 23 traveling north, when the school bus driver lost control of the vehicle, hydroplaned into a spin, and went across the road coming to rest just off the south bound shoulder.
“She hit a slick spot on the road,†said Webb. “Hydroplaned and sort of spun around.†Webb says that the bus was traveling with two students and the driver on board, and that no one was injured. According to Webb, the bus did not make contact with any other vehicles or objects.
