Son shoots father accused of assault and holding his family hostage

A Floyd County man who allegedly assaulted another man and held his own family hostage has been hospitalized after being shot by his son last week. According to County Attorney Keith Bartley, Randall Charles Dotson, 38, of Banner, was shot by his son, who was acting in defense of himself and his family. Dotson is charged with seven counts of each of wanton endangerment, unlawful imprisonment and terroristic threatening, as well as single counts of first-degree assault, fourth-degree assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. An arrest warrant complaint states that Dotson allegedly assaulted his wife and 17-year-old son, before holding them and five other members of his family against their will. Currently there are no charges pending against Dotson’s son. Dotson was unable to be in court Tuesday for his preliminary hearing, as he was still hospitalized with a gunshot wound. His condition is unknown.
