Pike Co. firefighter volunteering dangerously low

Though volunteer firefighters in Pike County battle intense blazes and put their lives on the line every day, they say they're facing a new problem:

No one's volunteering.

They say the problem exists because there are currently no incentives for anyone to volunteer. Proposed legislation would give volunteers a $1,000 tax credit.

The firefighters say that once someone volunteers for this job it becomes a part of you. Anyone wanting to volunteer can contact their nearest department. Officials say if they do not have enough volunteers, some rural departments could close, leaving homes in those areas with less protection.
