Accident involving school bus sends driver to hospital

A Thursday school bus accident sent the driver of the bus to the hospital. No students were on board at the time of the accident, which happened in front of the new Prestonsburg Elementary school.

School bus No. 604 was stopped in a line of traffic in the westbound lane of Route 114 in front of the school at the time of the wreck. An empty flatbed truck registered to Kentucky May Inc., out of Hazard, came around the curve too fast to be able to avoid colliding with the bus. Police said the truck driver attempted to stop and move over to avoid an accident, but still caught the corner of the bus as it veered to the side. The bus driver, who has not been identified yet, was taken out of the bus on a stretcher and transported to Highlands Regional Medical Center. The truck driver, who has also not been identified, appeared uninjured.
