West Liberty officer forced to shoot knife-wielding man
West Liberty police said they went out to a home on Liberty Road to deal with a domestic disturbance call when a man greeted them at the door with two knives.
Police Chief Hensley said one of his officers, Sergeant Scott Adkins, was forced to make a difficult decision and defend himself against a man holding a machete in one hand, a dagger in the other at a home just across from West Liberty Elementary School. He said the man was moving closer to Sergeant Adkins right as children were leaving school for the day. The difficult decision was made in an instant, and reports indicate the officer shot the knife-brandishing man, who later died.
Chief Hensley says Sergeant Adkins has been on the force for 13 years. Police are conducting an internal investigation.
