Election filing deadline postponed
Tuesday’s election filing deadline came and went, but it will soon come again. Though Tuesday was the last day on the books to file for most races, legal entanglements over competing plans in the state legislature to redefine electoral districts has forced the courts to push the deadline back a week for state congressional seats.
As such, House Speaker Greg Stumbo and state Sen. Johnny Ray Turner will have to wait until at least Tuesday before learning whether they will have any competition to retain their seats. Neither man has drawn a challenger as of yet. U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers and 97th District state Rep. Hubert Collins, whose district formerly contained three Floyd County precincts but would not if the current redistricting plan holds up, will also have to wait to see anyone else files against them, but both already have challengers lined up against them for the main elections in fall.
