Serious accident temporarily huts down U.S. 23 in Ivel

A two-car collision involving a tractor-trailer tied up traffic Monday near Ivel. According to Kentucky State Police, Post 9 in Pikeville received a call regarding the collision of a commercial vehicle and a passenger car on U.S. 23 near Ivel. Preliminary investigation revealed that Alvis R. Hawkins was operating a 1996 Kenworth tractor-trailer, when he attempted to turn left onto U.S. 23 southbound. He allegedly turned into the path of a 2008 Toyota Yaris driven by Philip W. Heffington.

Southbound U.S. 23 had to be shut down for a short of amount of time due to the accident. According to KSP, Heffington was transported to Pikeville Medical Center for his injuries. The collision remains under investigation by Officer Kevin Belcher.
