New UPike scholarship sparks new growth

With the creation of the K4CS scholarship, the University of Pikeville officials decided to spread their campus out a little. Officials have labeled nine counties as "coal-producing counties," and Thursday and Friday UPike officials traveled to each of those nine counties to discuss the new scholarship program and the creation of extension campuses in those counties.

With the scholarship, tuition at the UPike campus will be pretty close to that of state supported schools, and tuition at the extension campuses will be similar to that of community colleges. UPike officials say the governor has specifically allocated two million dollars of the multi-county coal severance funds for these scholarships this year, but they say if the demand is greater than that they can have more.
