Pike Co. shooter arrested

A man is behind bars after a shooting at Lowe's in Pikeville yesterday morning. Thankfully, no one was injured.

Police say 51-year-old Barry Cates, Jr. of Ivel, an employee of Lowe's for more than nine years, walked into the business around 6:30 a.m., Thursday, armed with a .22 caliber handgun. Det. Phillip Reed of the Pikeville Police Department says Cates admitted he intended on shooting another employee and to then shoot himself.

Cates told police he and the other employee had several altercations prior to Thursday's events. He is charged with one count of first-degree wanton endangerment and carrying a handgun by a convicted felon. Cates is being held at the Pike County Detention Center on a $100,000 cash bond.
