Public smoking ban vote postponed again
The House Health and Welfare Committee has again postponed a vote on a proposed statewide ban on smoking in public places. The measure had been expected to receive its first vote last week, but a Republican boycott forced it to be postponed. Health and Welfare Committee Chairman Tom Burch postponed the vote again Monday because some of his members weren't available for a meeting. The bill would prohibit smoking in businesses, including bars and restaurants and would extend even to private homes if those homes are used for child care or adult daycare.
Such a measure has been discussed in Kentucky for years, but lawmakers in Kentucky--many of whom have tobacco-producing constituents--have been reluctant to tackle the issue.
