Effort to prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining welfare fails in Senate

A Senate measure to keep illegal immigrants from getting welfare has failed in the House Local Government Committee. The bill sponsored by Republican Sen. Mike Wilson of Bowling Green was heard in committee Tuesday. It would have required documentation of U.S. citizenship or legal residency to qualify for benefits. People who couldn't produce a document such as a birth certificate or driver's license within 30 days could sign an affidavit. Kentucky Equal Justice Center Director Richard Seckel said stringent rules already make it rare for illegal immigrants to get benefits.
