Post offices staying open, hours cut
After vocal criticism and government intervention, many rural post offices slated to be closed should be staying open.
The nearly bankrupt U.S. Postal Service decided today to back off on its plan to close 3,700 rural post offices after May 15. Officials said they hope to instead try reducing operating hours to stem the tide of hemorrhaging money. The plan still needs regulatory approval, but could save the postal service half a billion dollars a year.
