Patriot Coal will halt mountaintop removal mining
Patriot Coal Corp will become the first US Coal operator to stop large-scale mountaintop removal mining in Central Appalachia, coming to a historic agreement with three separate environmental groups. The parties agreed to the deal and presented it to a federal judge on Thursday. The agreement stems from pollution lawsuits filed by several different groups. Patriot has agreed to idle some equipment, phasing out large scale strip mining. The agreement was announced during a proceeding before Judge Robert Chambers of the US District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia.
