More mining layoffs hit Southeastern Kentucky

In a year that has already produced over 2,000 layoffs in Kentucky for the mining industry, more bad news surfaced on Thursday with the announcement of another 40 layoffs. Harlan County is the latest Eastern Kentucky county to feel the effects of the struggling coal industry. Alpha Natural Resources has shut down the Stillhouse Mine in Cumberland. Officials with Alpha say a non-competitive market led to the closure. 80 miners in all will be affected. 40 miners may elect to transfer to other nearby Alpha mines in Harlan and Letcher counties, while another 40 miners will be laid off. County leaders say the layoffs will have an effect on the entire Cumberland area. Alpha Natural Resources explained that the closure will be permanent.
