Environmental groups are seeking to block mountaintop mines in southeast Ky. and W. Va.

Several environmental groups along with the Sierra Club are attempting to stop permits at two surface mines, claiming that the U.S. Corps of Engineers did not consider potential health risks to local residents.

The group have filed lawsuits to block permits required under the Clean Water Act. The Corps of Engineers issued the permits in July and August. The groups have claimed that the permits would allow the mining companies to destroy miles of streams from rock and soil dumped from the mining sites.

The southeastern Kentucky site is being mined by Leeco Inc. and the West Virginia site is being mined by Raven Crest Contracting.
