A regional humane society is forming in the Big Sandy Area

WYMT is reporting that a newly formed organization is now forming in the Big Sandy area is taking action to ensure that animals are protected.

Organizers say they have come together to form the Kentucky Mountain Humane Society.

The newly formed nonprofit organization comprised of representatives from six different counties held their first organizational meeting last week. The main topic was not getting new laws in place but making sure current ones are enforced.

Officials say when visiting any of the local shelters it is obvious that a regional humane society is greatly needed.

Shauna Brown, with the Floyd County Animal Shelter said, "They can help raise money for shelters that don't get a very big budget, there are some shelters that are completely nonprofit."

Even though the group consists of folks from different areas of the region, organizers say they all share the same goal.

Kentucky Mountain Humane Society officials encourage folks living in an area without an animal shelter to contact their county officials.
