Martin County School Board members vote to close Sheldon Clark High School

Over 300 members of the Inez and Warfield community turned out on Thursday, as the Martin County Board of Education determined the future of Sheldon Clark High School. The school has been closed since Wednesday morning, due to concerns for student and staff safety. Recent blasting work has created less than ideal conditions for the structural soundness of the building. Q95 News was on hand at the meeting, as members of the community voiced concerns over the possible closure of the school. One concerned parent questioned the board as to why the issue of the problems with the school were not addressed before one week prior to the scheduled opening of the new school year. Superintendent Steve Meadows explained that the blasting activity in the past few weeks had reached it's "flash point" and that the board needed to evacuate Sheldon Clark High School immediately. Meadows also noted that the safety of the children of Martin County was the top priority. Board members voted after a lengthy question and answer session to close the school by a vote of 5-0. Inez Middle School will now become Sheldon Clark High School. Inez Middle will move into the Warfield Middle School. The start date for the Martin County school system has also been pushed back to August 21st.
