SOAR Summit offers hope for future
Over 1,700 citizens from across the state of Kentucky were on hand on Monday for the first ever, SOAR or (shaping our Appalachian region) summit. Governor Steve Beshear, Congressman Hall Rogers, Speaker of the House Greg Stumbo and Senate president Robert Stivers opened the summit. Beshear told those in attendance that it was now more important than ever to improve our economy. The governor explained that the SOAR initiative was intended to be a process and not a one day event. Kentucky Speaker of the House Greg Stumbo explained that State Representative Leslie Combs was currently developing a plan to make the entire Mountain Parkway a 4 lane highway. Stumbo noted that the hope was for the plan to be added to stat next four year highway plan.
Regional Opportunity breakout discussions were held in areas such as : Job Creation and Retention, Infrastructure, Public and Private Investment and Tourism. Participants in the summit were told that Monday's event was only the beginning of the SOAR program.
