Eastern Kentucky coal counties see unemployment rates skyrocket
Several Eastern Kentucky coal counties have the states highest unemployment rates as the coal industry continues to struggle. A new report issued on Thursday by the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training shows a jobless rate in coal-rich Leslie County of 16.4 %. Other coal producing counties such as Magoffin, Letcher and Harlan all came in with unemployment rates of over 15%. Knott County recorded an unemployment rate of 14%. The latest figures showed unemployment rates had risen in 96 counties throughout Kentucky. The lowest rate in the state was in Woodford county at 5.9 %.
