Floyd County sheriffs office facing cuts after most recent fiscal court meeting

After the latest Floyd County Fiscal Court meeting resulted in magistrates voting to require the county clerk and sheriff to pay for insurance and retirement expenses for employees, sheriff John K Blackburn told court members if he was forced to pay for the items then for the first time in 15 years he would be forced to lay off almost half of his deputies. Blackburn told court members his office could not generate the funds needed to pay for the employee insurance and retirement costs. Floyd County attorney Keith Bartley told sheriff Blackburn that the court could not afford to pay the expenses either and that he would have to do do through his office. If no changes take place, the layoffs are expected to begin as soon as Wednesday.
