Leslie Co. mining accident takes a life

A mining accident in Leslie County has claimed one life.

A Leslie County mining accident has taken the life of a Perry County man. Officals reported that 52-year-old Jerry A. Watts of Slemp died after what is being called a machinery maintenance accident at a Leslie County surface mine.

Watts was killed at the Begley #1 mine site of T&T Energy in Short Creek at approximately 11 a.m. Watts was said to be doing welding work on a dozer blade when a jack slipped causing the blade liner to strike Watts in the head. The Leslie County corroner said the man died from blunt force trauma.

The accident is the first mining-related death in Kentucky in 2013.
