An Eastern Kentucky Coal Company is being sued by the federal government

The federal government has sued an Eastern Kentucky coal company in an attempt to collect more than $300,000 in unpaid fines for health and safety violations.

As of September 2011, Viper Coal, LLC owed $318,981 according to a complaint filed in federal court in Pikeville on Friday afternoon. The lawsuit seeks the stated amount as well as $122,000 more in other fees and unpaid interest.

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration issued more than 250 citations and orders to Viper Coal between 2008-2011 and has sent 20 letters seeking payment, to no avail. Viper Coal owns underground mines in Floyd as well as Pike counties.
