Mine closing in Southwest Virginia to cut 120 jobs

Alpha Natural Resources has announced the closure of a mine in Southwest Virginia due to a decline in production and demand. The closure will create layoffs of 120 people over the next two months. The Cherokee Mine located near Haysi will be closed over the next two months. Sixty-Six people were laid off last week. Fifty-Five others will remain on the job for the next 60 days to close the mine. The mine peak production was in 2007, when it produced 570,000 tons of coal. Last year, it produced about 300,000 tons and was expected to produce even less this year. The mine opened in 1997.
