Severe thunderstorms create widespread damage across eastern Kentucky

Severe thunderstorms raced across eastern Kentucky on Tuesday evening, leaving behind damage in several counties. Kentucky State Police dispatchers tell Q95 news that reports of trees down and power line damage were coming in to the post at a rapid pace Tuesday evening. The counties of Pike, Floyd and Magoffin reported trees down and power outages. AEP officials reported outages affecting more than 36,000 customers in a 15 county area at 9:00 pm on Tuesday. Pike County was the hardest hit county with over 9,000 customers losing power during the storms. Boyd County was another hard hit area with nearly 8,000 customers without power as of Tuesday evening. Numbers have improved this morning with overall outages listed at 28,688 throughout the area. Pike County was reporting 5,916 still without power, down from 9,000 late Tuesday evening. Crews are continuing to work to restore power as quickly as possible.
